Ruthven Barracks, near Kingussie, must be one of the most frequently photographed historic sites in Scotland. On this occasion, I was determined to capture the nightly illuminations. On my way to Ruthven a sudden snowstorm descended, coating everything in white and making driving rather unpleasant. I was determined to get my shot, though, and got to the Barracks in time to capture this view. What you don't see here is that the entire area around the Barracks is being swept by driving snow, so I had to shield the camera lens from the wind and keep checking to make sure no snow landed on the lens surface.
I bought my first 'serious' camera for a trip to the UK when I was in my 20s. That trip sparked not only a love affair with photography but a love affair with the wonderful landscape and heritage of Britain. Those twin loves have inspired me over the past several decades, as I've explored Britain from Orkney to Cornwall, and most points in between.
