Carisbrooke Castle stands on a high hill looking towards nearby Newport. The castle was begun in the Norman period, but is best remembered as the prison of Charles I, who was held here - despite 2 attempts to escape - before being taken to London for his execution. No such dark deeds troubled us on the day our family visited, when the afternoon sun lit the huge gatehouse that is Carisbrooke's most memorable feature.
